You need other people’s approval when their response has become more than information, warmth, or connection. It has become permission to feel okay. A compliment brings relief. A delayed reply brings panic. A critical look changes your entire day. You begin scanning other people for evidence that you are acceptable.

Wanting to be seen is not a weakness. Connection matters. Feedback can matter. The problem begins when approval becomes the only court that can decide your value.

Approval can become a short-term painkiller

Reassurance can feel powerful because it temporarily quiets an inner verdict. Somebody says you are good, attractive, talented, loved, or right, and the pressure eases. But when the relief fades quickly, you may need the next message, the next compliment, the next sign that nothing has changed.

The issue is not always a lack of kind people. It may be the inner structure receiving the kindness. If Source Code already says, “I do not count,” positive evidence can be dismissed, doubted, or treated as temporary.

The critic often makes approval feel urgent

The PIC may say, “Make them like you.” “Do not upset them.” “If they are disappointed, you have failed.” It uses another person’s reaction as a prediction of your value. That makes ordinary social uncertainty feel like danger.

Notice what you do when approval is missing. Do you overexplain, chase, agree too quickly, hide your needs, or attack yourself? The movement after the feeling shows you where pressure is deciding the next action.

Build internal authority without becoming isolated

Internal authority does not mean that nobody’s view matters. It means you can listen, learn, receive love, and consider feedback without handing over your entire right to respect yourself. You can ask, “Is this feedback useful?” “Does this relationship treat me with dignity?” “What do I actually know?” “What value am I trying to honour?”

That is sovereignty in everyday life: not becoming unreachable, but becoming less governable by fear of another person’s approval. Continue with why compliments may not land, when criticism is not yours to carry, and Sovereignty and Self-Esteem.
